This Rolex "Golden Egg" Oyster Perpetual, reference 6634, crafted in the mid-1950s, represents a fascinating chapter in Rolex's history. The Golden Egg model was Rolex's answer to the gold-capped Omega Constellation, which was popular at the time. By offering a watch with exceptionally thick gold capping, Rolex provided a more affordable alternative to solid gold watches without compromising on luxury appearance or durability. This piece comes included with a Rolex box and hang tag.
Design and Construction
This Rolex features a gold-capped case over stainless steel, measuring approximately 34mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug length of about 42mm. The "Golden Egg" nickname comes from the exceptionally thick gold capping, which at 240 microns was more than twice as thick as typical gold-capped watches of the era.
Movement
At the heart of this timepiece beats the automatic caliber 1030, featuring 25 jewels. The caliber 1030 was one of Rolex's workhorse movements of the 1950s and early 1960s, known for its reliability and accuracy. This movement also features the beautiful butterfly rotor, a hallmark of early Rolex automatic movements. The movement in this Rolex runs well at the time of listing, but has not been bench tested for precise accuracy.
Signature Features
The "Explorer style" dial with its distinctive 3-6-9 numeral layout is a notable feature of this Golden Egg model. The silvered honeycomb texture adds depth and visual interest to the dial. Also note the incredibly rare stamping of "Golden Egg" on the dial itself.
Dial and Aesthetics
The gold honeycomb dial features a clean patina that has developed over time, with its even yellowish surface and darker spots around the radium lume plots, adding character and authenticity to the piece.
Strap and Wearability
This Rolex comes fitted with a black leather strap measuring in at 7.25 Inches (not including watch head).
