This LeCoultre Memovox, crafted in approx. the 1950s, represents a groundbreaking chapter in horological history. The Memovox line, introduced in 1950/1951, quickly established itself as a pioneer in alarm wristwatch technology. The Memovox line has been in continuous production since 1950, making it one of the longest-running watch models in history. This particular example from the 1950s captures the essence of the early Memovox, embodying the innovation and craftsmanship that have made this line a legend in the watchmaking world.

Design and Construction

This piece features a yellow gold-plated case with a steel case back, measuring approximately 38mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug length of about 44mm. These dimensions are notably generous for the era. As such, this version of the Memovox is often referred to as the "Jumbo". Additionally, the name "Memovox" itself is a combination of Latin words meaning "voice of memory," aptly describing its alarm function.

Movement

At the heart of this timepiece beats the automatic P815 caliber, featuring 17 jewels. Introduced in 1956, the P815 made the Memovox the world's first automatic alarm wristwatch. This innovative movement featured a dual-barrel system: one for timekeeping and another for the alarm function, allowing for efficient energy distribution and a more powerful alarm sound. The rotor of this automatic movement is referred to as a bumper rotor due to its lack of full circumference rotation, instead opting to "bump" back and forth between coiled springs on opposing sides. The movement in this Memovox runs well at the time of listing, but has not been bench tested for precise accuracy.

Signature Features

The alarm complication is the standout feature of this piece. LeCoultre's approach to the alarm function was unique, utilizing a central disc on the dial for setting the alarm time. This design not only enhanced the watch's functionality but also became a distinctive aesthetic element of the Memovox line. The dual-crown system, one for time-setting and winding, and the other for alarm setting, is a hallmark of the Memovox design.

Dial and Aesthetics

The gold indices and hands pair elegantly with the silvered dial of this piece. Also note the inner ring of markers, allowing for easier setting of the alarm function of this piece. This Memovox is protected by a plastic crystal.

Strap and Wearability

This piece comes fitted with a brown genuine crocodile strap measuring approximately 7.5 inches (not including watch head).
