This Gruen timepiece, crafted in approx. the early 1940s, represents a fascinating chapter in Gruen's history. The production of this piece likely coincided with Gruen's efforts during World War II, when the company was able to continue producing watches due to its Swiss-made movements, while also contributing to the war effort by manufacturing gauges and instruments for the military.

Design and Construction

This Gruen features a refined yellow gold-plated case measuring approximately 26mm in diameter, with a lug-to-lug length of about 36mm.

Movement

At the heart of this timepiece is the manual-wind 411C Conoruma caliber, featuring 15 jewels. The Conoruma designation is particularly noteworthy, as it refers to Gruen's proprietary alloy used for balance wheels and hairsprings. This material was designed to maintain stability despite temperature changes, enhancing the watch's accuracy in various conditions. The movement in this Gruen runs well at the time of listing, but has not been bench tested for precise accuracy.

Signature Features

This Gruen model stands out with its distinctively pronounced lugs and a prominent crown. The lugs sit boldly on the case, creating a strong profile and secure strap attachment. The wide crown complements this design, offering easy winding and time-setting. These features give the watch a distinctive silhouette typical of certain mid-century designs.

Dial and Aesthetics

The dial on this Gruen displays a well-developed patina, giving it a warm hue that compliments the gold plating of the case. The applied hour markers have aged notably, taking on a rich, golden tone that contrasts with the dial's patina. This uniform aging of both the dial and markers creates a harmonious, authentic vintage look. Note the sub-seconds register at the 6 o'clock position adding additional complication to this timepiece.

Strap and Wearability

This Gruen comes fitted with a leather strap measuring approximately 6.25 inches (not including watch head), adding a touch of classic elegance to its overall presentation.
