This Elgin timepiece, crafted in approx. 1926, represents a fascinating chapter in Elgin's history. During this period, Elgin was at the height of its production capabilities, manufacturing millions of watches annually and solidifying its position as a dominant force in American watchmaking. The mid-1920s, at the heart of the Roaring Twenties, saw Elgin adapting to changing consumer preferences as wristwatches gained popularity over pocket watches among men.

Design and Construction

This Elgin features a distinctive octagonal yellow gold-plated case measuring approximately 27mm x 31mm, with a lug-to-lug length of about 38mm. The octagonal shape was a popular Art Deco design element of the 1920s, reflecting the contemporary aesthetic trends of the era.

Movement

While the specific movement number is not provided, Elgin movements from this period were known for their reliability and ease of service. This manual-wind movement with its sub-seconds complication was typical of Elgin's offerings in the 1920s, providing accurate timekeeping for everyday use. The movement in this Elgin runs well at the time of listing, but has not been bench tested for precise accuracy.

Signature Features

The hand-painted dial is a notable feature of this Elgin model. Hand-painted dials were becoming less common by the 1920s as mass production techniques improved, making this a somewhat unique characteristic for a watch of this period. This artisanal touch helps add a unique character to each piece, making every watch slightly different.

Dial and Aesthetics

It's clean white dial backdrop, paired with its lumed hands and hour markers also demonstrate Elgin's adoption of modern watchmaking innovations to improve legibility in low-light conditions.

Strap and Wearability

This Elgin comes fitted with a green leather strap measuring approximately 7.25 inches (not including watch head).
